MY HEART BURNS LIKE FIRE (A Zen Koan)

Soyen Shaku, the first Zen teacher to come to America, said: "My heart burns like fire but my eyes are as cold as dead ashes." He made the following rules which he practiced every day of his life:

In the morning before dressing, light incense and meditate.

Retire at a regular hour. Partake of food at regular intervals. Eat with moderation and never to the point of satisfaction.

Receive a guest with the same attitude you have when alone. When alone, maintain the same attitude you have in receiving guests.

Watch what you say, and whatever you say, practice it.

When an opportunity comes do not let it pass by, yet always think twice before acting.

Do not regret the past. Look to the future.

Have the fearless attitude of a hero and the loving heart of a child.

Upon retiring, sleep as if you had entered your last sleep. Upon awakening, leave your bed behind you instantly as if you had cast away a pair of old shoes.

A Great Love

I often catch myself with this thought lately, that if I love something, I must set it free, whether or not it comes back to me, whether or not it is meant for me, none of that matters... It was never mine in the first place. Nothing is mine. This is the beauty of Love, I own nothing, but when my spirit is moved, I become everything. I become a feather, a cloud, a drop of water or a tree... I become the world I see and the world beyond it, when this great Love consumes me.

The Love I Dream Of

I've always dreamed of a love that will move me and bring me to many different places at the same time. In places where sound and scent and touch and taste are one in my soul... where all are, at certain times trapped in stillness, and other times diffused by emotions, dancing, and soaring... a formless being in the wind.

The Ebb and Flow of Life

Life Force, Source Energy, Light, or Chi (whatever you call it) flows TO you and THROUGH you. The moment you decide to break the ebb and flow is the moment you get either overwhelmed or perceive lack in life.

LEGEND OF THE RAINBOW WARRIORS

There will come a time when the Earth grows sick and when it does a tribe will gather from all the cultures of the World who believe in deeds and not words. They will work to heal it...they will be known as the "Warriors of the Rainbow." (Cree Prophecy)

I resonate with this so much, especially these days - seeing more and more people awaken into a new day and light of their lives. Breaking down the system, living healthier lives, becoming more aware of what serves them, building bridges not walls, letting go of the things that separate us, and SHARING the journey with others so freely and openly. How wonderful it is to come together, forgetting all differences and remembering who we are... We are flowers in this infinite garden, beautiful and blessed as we are, and bringing more essence and meaning to this profound existence as we stand side by side with each other, budding, blossoming... in light of love, and peace.... Sharing our passions ---the very spirit and muse of this generation, and the generations to come.

I feel it.... it's happening.... Love is here, and we are coming back home.

Understand Yourself To Understand Your World

Until you understand yourself, and realize the beauty in you, only then will you understand the world and realize the beauty in it... Every course of event in your life will start to make sense and all the things you once thought could harm you will heal your soul.

What Makes It All Worth It?

We're all going to have to make some few sacrifices to get through each day, so we can truly live the life that we want to live. That's okay...have no guilt, or shame.... Stand proud. Keep moving. But do yourself a favor, make sure that it's a conscious choice, one that does not encourage you to abandon your passions, make certain that you're not following someone else's dream, and that dream is YOURS ,if it's yours, it will make it all worth it... when you know it's worth it you will have faith in yourself and believe in the vast potential and abundance in the person that is YOU ... and even if your body screams in pain your mind, and heart, and spirit can only scream with joy, so loud that your youth will awaken, so loud that you will be deaf to the sound of your pain.

A DREAMER (A Poem)

A dreamer knows no chains
A dreamer lives through pain
A dreamer has no cages
A dreamer never ages
A dreamer heeds no lies
A dreamer always flies
A dreamer is a bird
A dreamer saves the world

BEAUTIFUL SKY

I woke up to see a stunning sight outside my window. Such a marvelous sky. Looked almost like I painted it from my dreams. I don't think I've seen anything quite like it. I am so grateful for this moment, for when all I hear is the coming of disaster, and tragedy, a beautiful sky means the world to me.

NIGHTS LIKE THIS (A Poem)

There will be nights like this
When all the world seems to rest
In the calm and steady motion
Set off by the morning hour
The charming hour
And though the day is done
It lingers on ...

There will be nights like this
When the air is filled with
Unexplained bliss
And there is comfort
In uncertainty
There is no worry
For even worry sleeps
Behind peaceful shadows
Upon the great horizon
and moving skies ...

There will be nights like this
When Lazy is a friend
And a healer
When the songs that play
In the distance
Are perfect
All summoned and cradled
By the soul
Of a believer ...

There will be days like this
When time slows down
And you wonder
How the sun went down quicker
Even when it almost stood still
It is kinder than usual
There is no thrill
But this is better
For time is tender ...

There will be nights like this
When there is nothing to do
But head out and lay on the grass
Strum a random tune
And watch the darker sky
and the moon
The lonely moon...
With a smile
Because you know
They'll light up soon ...

There will be nights like this...

Peaceful Ground (A Poem)

I see you in my painted skies
Your laughter bursts in sunbeams
You hold my hand in daze and calm
Your footsteps on my peaceful ground

MY EYES (A Poem)

I want to speak to you with my eyes
Not because I have lost my voice
I have written my Soul in your trees
But my words are little pieces
That are swept away by your breeze

And in my eyes, there is nothing
That can be twisted or turned
Nothing I can deny
There is so much I want to show you
In these eyes
All my yearnings
That precious sparkle of joy
 that comes and goes
All my hopes
All my wildest dreams
All my fears
My deepest fears
My crystallized years

You will not see me until you see through me
You will not know me...
My hows and whens and whos and whys
Until you look into my eyes

I want to speak to you with my eyes
Not because I have lost my voice
I have written my Soul in your trees
But my words are little pieces
That are swept away by your breeze

I Am A Flower, And So Are You (A Poem)

I am a flower, and so are you.
Together we will turn this grave
Into a garden
In which kindness and grace
Will be our face
One by one
We shall reach out to the sun
So the earth will be kind to our roots
Come and blossom with me
And awaken this sullen ground
With the beauty and fragrance of life !

Another Note on Self-Love

The whole point of self-love is not to build one's ego, rather, to make one aware of the beauty he or she holds within, and to understand the infinite love that flows from one's heart, to be the source of joy and inspiration. This is the simple thing that many of us fail to recognize when we feel emptiness or trust issues even in the presence of loving and caring souls, and wonder why we find it difficult to reciprocate the love. It all starts from within. No one else should be held accountable for our insecurities, and shadows. It all starts with being aware that we are co-creators, catalysts of the energy we divide. We cannot give anything away if we are not aware that we have it.

ONLY IN SILENCE (A Poem)

Only in silence
Can my Heart reach out
To channel this Love
A Love
That will never be carried
By words alone

Only in silence
Can my Soul set its course
And go beyond the horizon

MEDICINE MAN - In Watercolor - 6.21.11

I have always admired the native man, his humility, his simplicity, his strength and pride in his roots. His love for nature and his belief that all of life is sacred. He believes that our earth is an extension of our past and our spirits, this is why being around the trees and the flowers, being under the sun, the ocean will always feel like home to us.

We are made of the earth, and we have everything we need around us. And we will return to this earth too.

If only everyone can live this way, to see oneself in another, to see all relations, in one another, then there will be less judging, less pain, less killing, more understanding and forgiveness, compassion... and unconditional love... and Mother Earth will heal in no time.

"Blooming Flames" (A Poem)

"I feel your love...
There is fire in my heart.
And each day with you
brings to light
a burning flame
that grows inside me
like a garden of
tulips blessed with
the colors of the sun."

Listen... (Poem)

Listen... the storm has brought me here
My rains have scattered
Do you hear my thunder
I bring no promise
For all prophecies are written
In the Soul of this land
They are yours to behold
Only a message of hope flows
In the force of my lightning

Listen... we are brothers and sisters
Each with a voice that can bind or set us apart
Could it be that we are here
To echo the hymn of the sweet chariot
So we may live each day with the strength
To claim our dreams and see them
Fade away in the night?
How long must we wait
To forge our truths in the wall of history
and sing the song of freedom with pride?
Or have we forgotten the sound of our true voices
So much that we can only hear
The pounding noise of our fearful hearts?
The night is young but the night will end soon
Are we ready to meet the dawn?

Listen... all our hearts are screaming in the skies
Listen carefully.. let the mind rest
There is no shame in not knowing
Bring your hands together and gather around the children
For they have blessed us with our joys
And in their eyes we find the wisdom of the stars
Cradle them , we are not warriors without the child within
Remember them, we are not dreamers if our youth is forgotten

Listen... Lay down your weapon
Your light is your true sword
Do not fight the shadows, heal them
For all the shadows and all the wounds are found within
gather around and plant seeds of love in every blood and kin
And let hand and feet nurture the sacred soil it grows on
Never stop healing, and growing,
And have no desire for the flower
For it is already yours, it blooms inside your heart
Have faith in your sword and your seed
They are the keys to your freedom
And revelation

LILY (A Poem)

She floats and glides
Through the mists
And the haze
And she kisses the rays
Of the sun
When it comes down
To touch her face
Her petals reach out
To the air above her
Open and vulnerable
To the dust around her
She smiles, there is no pain
And she fears not the loss
Of her gain
For they all wash down
In her waters
Her strength
It grows from within
She is a lily swimming
In the river of your dream
She takes comfort,
Silent comfort in your flow
And she drinks
From the stream of your Soul
She breathes...

Your love is her home.

MIRAGES (A Poem)

Once again
The gates have opened
I see mirages
And they see me

In the sweet rush
Of heaven in my soul
I catch a glimpse
of the sign
that simply is...

I give in ...
I begin to walk
Hand in hand
With this
Unspoken mystery

MY GUIDES

I believe in my guides, and I'm pretty sure they believe in me too, because no matter how I feel, whether or not I am in the mood to write I get up and I dress up, and show up where I am needed... and then I get inspired by a friend, a song, a situation, or a verse, and then I find myself sharing and sending my message through.

Someone asked me once if I am one person or am I a team of writers. Technically, you can say I am alone. But I wouldn't be able to do this without the collective inspiration from the world I see, and the world beyond it.

I am so thankful for the love, the sunshine, and the angels in my life.

A MOMENT WITH THE SONG (A Poem)

Get me out of these four walls
Let the doldrums end
I just want to breathe easy
Let the sun out again
Sweep me out of the darkness
My reverie waits
There's a star in the middle
It's closer today
Take me high on a skyline
Of rhythm and rhyme
Let it rain with emotion
I'll drink it like wine
Pull me into your orbit
Where there is no death
Your touch is electric
I'm one with your breath

A SACRIFICE OR A GIFT?

Everything changes in time, and beliefs or value systems are constantly under construction in my book... Certain things I learned, I begin to unlearn... One of them is the concept of sacrifice in love. I realized after many years, and after a few relationships that didn't work out, that in every act of love I manifest it is better to say "I offer this gift" instead of saying "I offer this sacrifice". Although to sacrifice means giving up something for a worthy cause, I find it self-centered now, for it connotes hurt, toil, suffering.. a self inflicted pain, an agenda that only builds my ego. This is why so many people suffer constantly in relationships. They feel that they have done something noble and when it is not reciprocated, they put blame on each other, not taking accountability for their intentions, eventually, the purpose of love is defeated. I do not perceive love and the sharing of love this way -- I have learned that true love is kind, humble, selfless, compassionate and no less than uplifting and liberating... just positive in ever way. The formula I choose to live by is simple: Love is sweet and never done in vain, and there is no gain from an obsession with pain.

ALL THE LIGHTS REMAIN (A Poem) ~ In Memory of Jani Lane

Do you remember
How many times
My eyes sparkled
With your soul and strum
your western drum
In your glory days
your melody ablaze
Like fire in the middle of
A velvet road
Touching and reaching
My better days
The younger days
When voice was soft
And heart was tough
You're a diamond in the
Road so rough

Do you remember
How many times
I lost myself
In your lovely face
Your lonely gaze
I laughed out
and teared up
And sang proud
And reached out
A spirit so free
That was you in me
You're a lamb
in a flock of wolves
Preacher in a flock of fools

Do you remember
How many times
you raised me up
In a lovely trance
And so I danced
In my wishful days
You were there
To see red
And to Heaven
I called as I cried on my bed
And in your own way
You made my day
When you said
It wasnt so far away

Do you remember
How many lights lit up
from across the stage
When you poured
your heart
To a lonely crowd
Can you see them now
From your sun and cloud
It's not grayed out
'cause all your friends
Will run your show
and all your foes
Have made amends
And all your dreams
Are bright again...

When you poured your rain
All the lights remain

IN A LOVER'S DREAM (A Poem)

More powerful than the sound
Of drums in the distance
More lovely than hymns
Of the birds in her land
Is the silence of minds
In the spaces they meet
In a lover's dream
The universe speaks

More potent than the scent
Of roses in spring
More tender than lavender
Close to her skin
Is the kiss of his soul
In the hour of the moon
In a lover's dream
The universe blooms

The Earth is Dancing (A Poem)

See the ocean sparkle
as moonlight glides on its surface.
Feel the flow and force
of the rise and fall of tides.
Hear the beating
of heaven's percussion
and feel the rhythm
of awakened ground.
The earth is dancing.
Just dance along with it.
To dance is to set yourself free.

COME NEAR, BELOVED WIND (A Poem)

Come near, Beloved Wind
We are strangers, once again
In a city where no whispers are heard
And the alleys are built of dust and darkness

I long to meet you for a minute or two
For coffee, tea, or a glass of wine
Upon the coming of dusk and the blanket of night
Or by the balcony to catch a glimpse of rare daylight
Feel free to glide between the stone walls of these tombs
Or the ground on which my chaos lingers
And sweep off the mild debris before it builds
Another field of unforgiven time
I want to feel the strength of your innocence
Slide against my hardened skin and permeate my pores
Arm me with a sword that blows
So I may break away from the comfort of my walls
I do not belong in this shelter for cowardly souls
Let me breathe your air and sky
Hold me captive in your mist and raise me up to the clouds
When the morning dew is born again
And my breeze becomes your faithful breath

Come near, Beloved Wind
We are lovers, once again
In a city where no whispers are heard
And the alleys are built of dust and darkness

Love and fear cannot occupy the same space

To have an open mind is to observe without falling trap to the thoughts that separate you from your true self and from this moment. Never forget what you are made of, you are made of pure love and and you exist here, now. Many will try to convince you to think otherwise, to support the illusion of fear, and to live somewhere that is not the present but if you are aware of who you are, you will know what is best, and that is to live in the heart.

Be open to life and what it brings forth, but be mindful of how you interpret the signs.

Love and fear cannot occupy the same space. It is a choice that we all struggle with everyday. We forget who we are when we live in fear. Love is the only way to remember...

TRANSCENDING OURSELVES

We cannot overcome our struggles by denying pain, death & fear, if we do that we are denying or own truths within. Sooner or later the truth will catch up & it will hurt. We all know this, we just forget sometimes. We can only overcome these forces by directing our attention to the higher ideals, & in our willingness to transcend ourselves we can guarantee us healing, and sunshine after the rain. Lots of warm rays of light & this great renewable resource can only flow from within. ♥

In My World There Is A Cherry Tree (A Poem)

In my world
There is a cherry tree
By which you sit
And wait for me
In my world
Time does not exist
And my Soul is free
To be whatever
It wishes
To be
And while you sit
By that cherry tree
Waiting for me
I have already kissed
Your eyes
With a falling leaf
Or a soft petal
And run my fingers
Through your hair
With the dancing breeze
And held your face
With the warmth
And the light
Of the setting sun

WHEN SHE LOVES (A Poem)

When She loves
When She truly
Loves
She will give everything
For Love
Even if there is nothing left
To give
She will find a way...

Art by Edward Foster

No one can hurt you if you know your real worth

No one can hurt you if you know your real worth. No one can make you feel inferior or small without your approval. There is no sense in pointing fingers. Blame will only prolong your agony. Everything happens inside you, embrace the good emotions, acknowledge unpleasant ones and settle them within. ♥

LOVE COMES... UNANNOUNCED (A Poem)

Love comes, unannounced
Like a tidal wave of stars
Crashing quietly
Into my inner space

Washing my very being
With air
That gives the weary mind
Its breath
My thoughts surrender
To the wind of change
While I paddle the boat
That brings me
To the edges of my Soul
An ocean
Within a myriad of oceans
Touched by the ripple
Of a restless heart

Love comes, unannounced
Like a tidal wave of stars
Crashing quietly
Into my inner space
